LOCATIONS

Sunspire

Though Sunspire thrives, it remains an undeveloped town. There are few paved paths but plenty of natural walking trails. With a modest population of 3,000, the economy is unstable and there’s a perpetual scarcity of supplies in every family’s storage. Even if some shops can provide supplies or services, it’s never enough to meet traveler demand, and most establishments are always seeking new hires.

The lack of supplies has little to do with the town’s location. Sunspire is positioned strategically, as it has a nearby water source, fertile soil for dryland farming, and abundant resources in the surrounding forests and mountain ranges. Moreover, numerous Old World ruins have yet to be explored.

Sunspire’s underdevelopment is due to insufficient manpower, inadequate equipment, and a lack of education. The available tools are ill-suited for extensive explorations, limiting the town's capacity for discovery. Education, centralized in the modest local library, falls short due to its size and the lack of comprehensive materials. Finally, there aren’t enough able-bodied or well-educated individuals who can fill crucial roles. The younger populace are too focused on the needs of their families and gravitate towards short-term financial pursuits that divert their attention from initiatives that could uplift the town.

Despite the mayor's efforts, progress is slow. Inviting adventurers and refugees, while somewhat successful, is a challenge due to the lacking infrastructure and inconvenient transportation. It doesn’t help that many adventurers perish along the way due to the perilous desert. The recent arrival of fresh faces (read: you) brings hope!

North
Daybreak District: An empty district that has been converted into temporary housing for the new arrivals. Originally, the housing was intended for local travelers and traders from within the planet, but with the recent rise of strange foreigners entering Sunspire, the outsiders are now the ones occupying the space.

This is where new characters will temporarily stay. Within the district is a small encampment of shoddily-built, colorful stacked apartments. Most of the apartments are makeshift shipping container homes, painstakingly excavated by the locals from a nearby old ruin and thrown together with their best efforts. The space it offers is limited, but it’s enough for a bed, a desk, and a small bathroom with a standing shower.

This district is quite large, so the rest of the space remains unoccupied. The future development of this district will depend on the actions of those staying here.

Sunspire Watchtower: A guard post containing sturdy and tall gates leading outside of Sunspire. It comes with a tower, a lounge area for breaks, and an immigration office next to it. Local guards always come in and out of the gates when they change shifts. They patrol both within and outside the boundaries of Sunspire.

Fair Maiden Tradepost: Right after checking in at the immigration office, traders, tourists, adventurers, and refugees directly come here to set up camp. Parked caravans and gatherings around campfires are a common sight in this area. Beside the camping grounds, there’s a decent-sized bazaar that contains an array of stalls that sell mostly foreign goods.

While a small percentage of local Sunspire products can be found here, the majority is available in the main markets on East Street.

South
Lusty Lizard Tavern and Inn: The town's favorite hub, the inn attracts both Sunspire locals and visitors from beyond. Many come not just to stay overnight but to enjoy lunch on a bustling workday, unwind with friends or family, or indulge in a night of revelry. The inn's special menu adapts to the season and the prevailing market conditions.

Due to its limited capacity of 30 rooms, most usually occupied, the inn can’t host many guests. As a result, most passing traders, tourists, or adventurers choose to camp at the Fair Maiden instead.

Morning Wood Works: A bustling local lumber business providing basic carpentry supplies and wood-related services. Due to high demand, clients are placed on a waiting list before securing commissions from them. Aptly named, the timber masters indulge in making wood puns and claim to stroke fine wood for important reasons – to feel the quality of the material, gain inspiration, and become one with their craft.

Knotty by Nature Books: A little shop filled with an impressive selection of erotica literature and scandalous paintings all available for purchase. Most of the books here were written by local writers and those posing to be writers. While the writing quality may vary, the target audience doesn’t mind the plot as long as it’s hot. Customers must be of legal age and have a matured mind or they’ll be kicked out.

Society of Explorers, Archeologists, Machinists, Ecologists, and Naturalists (SEAMEN) Research Center: Research center where anything strange from the Old World is brought to be analyzed and restored by the society’s members. Please don’t giggle at their group name. They spent a lot of time arguing before they settled on it.

They dream of building a magnificent museum to display what they’ve accomplished so far and have a couple of small exhibitions. They aim for this museum to elevate Sunspire’s culture and attract more tourists, but as they lack both funding and an impressive work history, their ambitious museum project is currently stagnant.

East
Myrta’s Item Shop: A shop owned by a large, muscular woman with crocodile scale patches on her skin named Myrta, who is known to break fingers and arms if she catches anyone giving themselves a five-fingered discount for her wares. Life is difficult for everyone. Items for everyday needs are sold here — from table salt to scented candles, the general store has it covered.

Golddust Apothecary: The local alchemist shop sells common items such as health potions for minor injuries or certain over-the-counter medicines. Unfortunately, their limited selection makes it fall short of being your one-stop shop for all things health-related. Tucked beside the shop is a small clinic with creaky yet cozy beds you can count on one hand. A sign outside cheerfully advises passersby to be mindful of the patients resting within.

Dragon’s Claw Forge: The local blacksmith shop, owned by a burly man with a beard that nearly reaches his knees and his three equally long-bearded sons. They look intimidating, but they couldn’t be nicer and will help convert any of the junk you bring to them into weapons, tools, prosthetics, traditional appliances such as stoves, and other useful items or equipment. The entire family is very passionate about metalworking, so they’re always asking customers to bring them interesting materials to work with.

The East Street Bazaar: A bustling public market where residents can acquire all sorts of wares and products. Compared to the Fair Maiden, the main bazaar is wider in scale. Many family livelihoods are present here as these shops are their bread and butter. Family members take turns to manage their shops. Crafters teach their successors the ropes. These are all seen out in the open and anyone can feel inspired by their hard work.

The market boasts a decent selection of homemade delicacies, apparel, jewelry, paintings, and various trinkets. Additionally, it frequently features rare materials sourced by local explorers and mining families, although these prized items quickly vanish due to high demand, making them elusive commodities in the current economic conditions.

Sunspire Dock: A broken dock, currently in need of funding and workers to repair. Right beside it are the neglected ruins of an old world diner. The diner is filled with eroded walls, cobwebs, and broken furniture. Locals will say the dock has been out of use for years, and no one can decide whose responsibility it is to fix the darn thing, including restoring the diner. Its only use right now is a fishing spot.

West
Silverlight District: Aptly named because residents claim to often be blinded by the solar rays bouncing off the glass pyramid at certain points of the day. This is the residential district where the local Sunsfolk live. If they have no business, foreigners are told not to loiter here unnecessarily for the community’s privacy and security. No one wants trespassers near their homes!

At the edge of the district, there’s a house that functions as an animal shelter and is open to the public. They have a wide variety of rescued animals and the locals enjoy foster parenting for them. Their current inhabitants aren’t many, but a substantial number are eagerly waiting for their forever homes.

Sunyield Farms: Private communal farms run by several affluent families. A permit is required to enter. Most of the town’s produce is grown here using dry farming methods. Adjacent to the fields lies an expansive pasture for animals, accompanied by barns and stables to provide shelter and care for them.

Center
Royal Palm Square: A lush palm garden that decorates the very center of Sunspire and surrounds a beautiful glistening lake replete with fresh fish.

Paladin Guild Headquarters: A large barracks where the Paladins train and sleep. The current head of the Paladin Guild is a woman by the name of Guildmaster Fenix. She will only accept new recruits who successfully undergo the guild’s most vigorous trial: performing a hundred squats under the desert sun while balancing two buckets of water on a long, thin rod.

Mother Goose Library: An old book lover used to live here long ago. Written on his will was a request to convert his tiny house into a library so that his dear collection would be able to help Sunspire’s future. Touched by this, the citizens at the time did their best to make his last wish come true.

In this era, the petite, antiquated library has transformed into a repository with a steadily expanding collection. Local writers contribute books, and intrepid explorers bring ancient texts from the Old World. Visitors may encounter interesting finds, from old manuals and explorer diaries to compendiums of local flora and fauna, children's books, and fiction from the Old World.

Since Sunspire lacks a formal school building, the back area of the library doubles as a makeshift classroom, where local children gather to study with their teachers.

The Acropolis of Seraphina: Sunspire’s most eye-catching glass pyramid is located on top of a tall hill. The combined height of the pyramid and the hill allows it to be seen from a great distance, serving as a beacon for lost refugees from other ruined parts of the world. It currently functions as a place of worship, but no one knows what it used to be before the War as much of its structure has either been destroyed long ago or was buried deep underground.

Wherever you are in town, its view can be seen from various angles and distances. The pyramid welcomes all, but the Seraphim expects anyone who steps inside to respect the sacred space. The Seraphim maintain the pyramid’s overall condition and cleanliness, and they also maintain a modest greenhouse within its glass walls to improve the atmosphere for prayer and meditation. As Sunspire locals aren’t majority religious, there aren’t many who visit.

Beyond Sunspire

☀️🌵
The Shifting Sands: The name for the desert that surrounds Sunspire. It is a perilous terrain that is nearly impossible to map due to Akekhu’s vicious sandstorms that often roll through and change the desert’s shape. Explorers are prone to hallucinating and seeing mirages in the distance if they are out too long and travel too far from Sunspire.

Mount Starcrest: The highest peak within sight of Sunspire borders a deep, barely explored valley within its mountain range. No man-made paths exist in the mountain range, so navigating it is extremely difficult and dangerous, especially during stormy weather.

Sunspire locals can only explore up to the mountain’s base as they remain ill-equipped for extensive explorations. However, old world remnants, including rusted trucks, broken refrigerator doors, or separated blades from an electric fan, suggest the existence of larger old world ruins within the unexplored valley.

Sobek Oasis: Home to the Makaras. It is a lush and beautiful oasis surrounded by small tents and encampments, but very difficult to approach due to how well-guarded it is. Rumor has it that the waters of the oasis are home to some of the most delicious seafood in the entire desert.

The Obelisk: An old ruin created from a skyscraper building that had fallen and now serves as the home for the notorious beast Sarash. Approach with caution.
